I’m still trying to figure out how he kept the wheels on the paper so well, especially through the corners — mad skills!

Incredible Art that Makes a Difference

Made with SRAM bicycle components, then auctioned off for charity, this year’s entries almost doubled in number over 2011. For this 2nd annual edition, the 2012 SRAM pART PROJECT hit New York with over 80 artists contributing original works. This year, for the first time, works of collage and sculptures were part of the allowable submissions. The works were featured in a juried gallery exhibition, then sold at a gala live auction event.

The auction was held on November 29th, at the Cedar Lake Theatre in New York City, with 100% of the proceeds going to World Bicycle Relief — please visit their site and learn more about their great work.

I’m reminded every time I visit a site, watch TV or drive somewhere that too many brands are clamoring for my attention. On the road trip of life, I keep asking “Are we there yet?” as ads interrupt literally every aspect of daily living. Information overload has gotten so bad that, many times, we are unable to turn it off — remember when the reason for cable TV was to bring more variety AND eliminate ads? — now I can’t get to the ads without other ads interrupting my program!

Logorama, the Oscar-winning animated short film, shows us what it feels like sometimes.
Rating: NR (language and graphic cartoon violence)

This is why I’m always drawn to clean, clutter-free design; it’s more effective and is a much-needed breath of fresh air in our crowded landscape.

Let’s face it, advertising has changed exponentially with the advent of social media and, as I write this, Pinterest is the latest social network brand to clutter the web with yet another logo! Whenever possible, remember to stop and smell the roses. Turn off your device. Enjoy the moment. After all, your mind takes the best pictures!

The challenge, process and solution of the Rio 2016 Olympics logo

After seeing the trainwreck logo of the current London 2012 Olympics, I feel future Olympic logos have nowhere to go but up. But Tátil, the Brazilian agency that created the Rio 2016 logo, went so far up from the 2012 mark, that I had to feature their logo’s success. Apparently, the committee that selected Tátil’s logo out of 138 submissions felt it was strong too.

Once the challenge of being awarded the project was overcome, the collaborative process took place. A team of more than 40 multidisciplinary people honed their thoughts, concepts and findings on current trends and past Olympic brands into one very effective logo. While the logo is just one part of the Rio 2016 brand, it is the main jumping off point that drives the entire Olympics. Tátil hit it out of the park with their solution—one logo that packs so much meaning into such a small space.

Inspired by the people, identity and landscape of Rio, Brazil, the logo combines passion, beauty and a carefree spirit into one truly Olympic mark; a mark that evokes joy, unity, friendship and celebration (think Carnival). Its meaning and applications also score bonus points by being flexible (the people could be the locals, fans or athletes) and by tying into the colors of the five Olympic logo rings.

See the process and solution here >
